Chapter 9

A Grandness vis-à-vis Ill

Of sound mind and good heart where dwells the Light.

∼ Canto XI Verse 30 of the Aennas

Several days passed along the road in the forest. The golden light of the woods was as strong as the homes of the nymphs. The creatures walked without a care in the world, and Nuala’s form attracted them. Their gleeful expressions brought happiness to the nymph. And Oscar himself couldn’t help but feel happy as well. That was until he chanced upon the donyx—the two-clawed—so named for their hefty claws, sharp enough to cut a man in half with one swing.

These creatures struck fear to him with their form, and he cowered behind Nuala. She laughed.

“You needn’t be afraid of them,” she said. “They won’t hurt. Aren’t you the savior? Shouldn’t you be braver? What happened to your confidence?”

“You say that,” said Oscar, “but these beasts look ready to devour me. I can’t help it if my self-preservation takes precedence. Besides, it seems you might do better with this type of creature than me.”

“You aren’t wrong,” she said, giggling.

She coaxed them with her low calls. When they came near, she rubbed their beaks and ruffled their feathers. They took a liking to her. And then they noticed Oscar and looked about her at the frightened man.

They approached him, much to his horror. And he braced himself to be devoured. The donyx licked him and rubbed their beaks against his hands. It seemed they had taken a liking to him as well, and they gave their high cries. One of them bent and beckoned Oscar to come.

“Does it want me to sit atop it, Nuala?” asked Oscar.

“Yes, go ahead!” she said.

He got atop the donyx and it immediately started striding far and fast, and then it turned around and made a full circle toward Nuala. They were swift creatures, faster than even horses!

Oscar shook his head, dizzied from the speed.

“How was your first ride, dearest savior?” asked Nuala.

“About as delightful as being tossed in the air,” he said as he sighed.

She burst into laughter, and the donyx seemed to laugh alongside her. It seems he was a joke now. Better that than be eaten, he supposed.

They soon went on their way, giving their farewells to the donyx. Traveling by the many streams and rock faces, the road slowly sloped downward, and they raced down quickly. They reached the end of the forest and espied a walled city in the distance. It seemed larger than Igneytos.

They walked toward it, and passed by the many fields and outer villages. Oscar looked at the villagers, who seemed mirrored in their disposition in relation to those under the tyranny of Maesos. Their faces brimmed with happiness, their last harvest proved abundant, and it seemed they lived relatively peaceful lives. This brought Oscar at least a little joy.

Even so, in the back of his mind, he couldn’t help but feel frustrated over having left Fydhos behind. It wasn’t fair. Regardless, he and Nuala would find their way to him again.
